SARS-CoV-2 is a virus. But pretty much all of us already know this… So why should it matter what type of virus SARS-CoV-2 is anyway? Well, to understand that we need to break down what kind of a virus it is and: 1) what it does in the body, 2) how vaccines affect it, and 3) how it mutates.
It was recently brought to my attention that it isn’t super clear what all of the different virus types are, what they look like, how they get into our body, how they infect cells, etc. “Why isn’t there a diagram available to explain how SARS-CoV-2 fits into the wide range of viruses out there,” a friend asked over the course of our two-hour long conversation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Interesting question. Quite honestly, I’m not sure! So here is a quick breakdown:
VIRUSES can be broken down into several different types. For example, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), influenza, and coronaviruses, amongst many others. Influenza viruses can then be broken down further into H1N1, H3N2, etc. Sound familiar? You might remember the “swine flu”.
